K9 TailSaver Fitting Instructions

Follow these steps to get a secure, comfortable fit. Most dogs adjust to TailSaver within the first day.

1

Prepare the Tail

Clean and dry the tail. If your vet has applied a dressing, make sure it is secure and breathable before sliding the sleeve on. Do not use adhesive tape directly on fur.

2

Slide the Sleeve On

Gently roll the padded sleeve over the tail tip and slide it up until the injured area is fully covered. The padding should sit directly over the wound. If between sizes, go with the larger option.

3

Attach the Harness

Drape the harness over your dog's back and clip the chest strap under the belly. The harness distributes hold across the body instead of relying on the tail alone.

4

Connect Sleeve to Harness

Clip or loop the sleeve attachment point to the harness tail strap. This anchors the sleeve so it stays positioned through wagging, rest, and daily movement.

5

Adjust the Fit

Tighten or loosen the chest strap until you can fit two fingers between the harness and your dog's body. Check that the sleeve sits snug but not tight. The tail should still move naturally.

6

Monitor the First Hour

Watch your dog for the first 30 to 60 minutes. Some dogs try to investigate the sleeve initially. Redirect with a walk or treat. Most dogs stop noticing it within the first session.

Daily Care Tips

  • Remove the sleeve daily to inspect the wound, clean the area, and let it air out for 10 to 15 minutes.
  • Wash the sleeve with mild soap and warm water. Air dry or tumble dry on low.
  • Keep a backup sleeve on hand so protection is never interrupted while one is drying.
  • Re-check harness tension after meals or naps, since body position changes can shift the fit slightly.

Troubleshooting

  • Sleeve slipping or shifting off center:
    1. Check that the tail can lift enough for your dog to go to the bathroom — but not as high as the hips.
    2. Off-center shifting is normal for the first couple of days; it usually takes up to 2 days of small adjustments to get everything centered and stable.
    3. Make sure the blue and red straps are back-threaded. If they are not, they loosen over time and the system shifts.
    4. If the top of the sleeve reaches further than one-third of the total back length, or is further forward than the thighs, it may be the wrong size — contact us for a size exchange.
  • Dog chewing the sleeve: Try a bitter apple spray on the sleeve exterior. If chewing persists, a short-cone e-collar can help during the adjustment period.
  • Red marks under harness: Loosen the chest strap. Two-finger clearance is the target. Check that fur is not bunched under the strap.
